      Sharmila Parmanand

Dr. Sharmila Parmanand has a Ph.D. in Multi-Disciplinary Gender Studies from the University of Cambridge on a Gates scholarship. Her doctoral research examined ‘sex trafficking’ discourses and interventions in the Philippines from a critical perspective. Most of her research projects interrogate how development and state interventions targeted at women in the global south reflect and shape their lived realities, with a focus on gender and international development, the politics of knowledge production, and feminist entanglements with the state on issues of human rights and women’s precarious labour.
She has a master’s in Development Studies from the University of Melbourne on an Australian Leadership Award scholarship and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Ateneo de Manila University. She was previously a Gender and Human Rights Teaching Fellow at the LSE Department of Gender Studies and a lecturer at the University of Vermont Department of Theatre and the Ateneo de Manila University Department of English and Literature. She is also one of the former instructors of Media Civics Lab way back in 2020-21.
